TWO EXTREMELY RARE U. S. HALF DOLLARS

The Extremely Rare Proof 1836 Milled Edge Half Dollar

658. 1836 Reeded edge half dollar. Brilliant PROOF. Extremely rare. A

similar specimen was reported to have sold for $750.00 on the
West Coast last year. This specimen should equal that price.
(750.00)

The Excessively Rare 1838 Gobrecht Half Dollar

659. 1838 Gobrecht Half Dollar. The obverse is similar to the Gobrecht dollars

of the same year. The reverse is also similar to the Gobrecht
dollars except for HALF DOLLAR instead of ONE DOLLAR.
This coin is an original struck on a 206% grain planchet. Struck
from dies 4-C (See “The Secret History of the Gobrecht Coin¬
ages” by Walter Breen). This coin was unknown to numismatists
until three specimens were discovered in 1956 (See page 532,
May 1957 “Numismatist”). This Gobrecht half dollar is a choice
Proof and a magnificent showpiece. If an 1838 Gobrecht dollar
with 25 coined is worth $600, this far rarer item should be worth
much more. This piece is just as desirable as any Gobrecht dollar
and should bring in the neighborhood of $1000.00.
